Damp, Musty Odors in the basement or crawl space?

Mold and mildew causes this damp, musty smell. These are musty smelling fungi that thrive in moist conditions. Keeping humidity down reduces the chance for mold to grow. In general, mold will not grow at less than 50% relative humidity! Dehumidification is the key, even after you've installed a basement waterproofing system. Of course, any groundwater, plumbing or other leaks should be fixed, as part of a strategy to eliminate mold.

Mold spores will certainly irritate someone with allergies. The number one allergen however, is the fecal matter of dust mites. Dust mites don’t drink water, but absorb it out of the air through their skin. In order to live, dust mites need relative humidity over 50%. Reducing the relative humidity below 50% will cause dust mites to die off.

First it rings the moisture out of the air with its powerful dehumidification system. In the humid months most typical dehumidifiers will run continuously because they lack the power and air circulation capacity to dry more than a 300 sq ft area. Secondly as the air is circulated through the unit it passes through a two stage filter system. A pre-filter for large dust particles can be rinsed clean as needed, and a second, easy to replace, slide-in filter (yellow), that takes out particles as small as two microns. There are also charcoal filters available for odor removal.
